The Crying of Lot 49

October 8th, 2006 (01:53 pm)

Things I may want to consider later:

--impossible names, meaningless names, names are too obvious, could mean something but they really don't (much the way Oedipa feels that there is a larger message but she can't quite understand)
--entropy and information theory (book is a closed system and more and more disordered as it goes on)
--the Sixties: social unrest, LSD, Cold War, JFK, civil rights (fragmented society)
--literary analysis (Wharfinger play)
--"Shall I project a world?" solipsism, relativist philosophies
--letters, mail, communication
--paranoia, detachment
--mental illness, schizophrenia
--anarchy and/or revolution
--"danger of excluded middles" (The Tristero either is or it isn't. Could it both be and not be? Other possibilities? It was and now it's not?)

That book is lying on my floor right now. Even now. Still.

I just re-read it after seeing it on some hokey best of list. I remembered that I liked it a lot but couldn't remember any details. It renewed my liking tenfold! I wanted to keep some notes somewhere I might find them again, in case I ever get the opportunity to write a paper on it.

The fact that I'm finding so much time to read lately is really making me doubt the value of the classes I'm paying for.
